Virtually Speechless

Not even edgewise word could enter in;
his verbiage was so fast-paced, apt, and skilled;
though I had an idea clearly due to win,
the intended effect was virtually killed.

No communicated effort hit its mark;
the words, machine-gunned, earned just a "Yup."
All my efforts lacked competing spark;
you might say the fellow "rapped it up."
